GOLDEN RETRIEVERS - HELP & ADVICE IF YOU'RE THINKING OF CHOOSING A GOLDEN RETRIEVER

GOLDEN RETRIEVER GOLDEN RETRIEVER

Are you thinking of buying a golden retriever? Here's a few frequently asked questions about golden retrievers to help you in your decision making!

Are golden retrievers good with kids?

Most golden retrievers are wonderful with kids, especially when they have been regularly exposed to well-behaved children as puppies. However, you have to bear in mind that golden retrievers are large and quite excitable dogs.
Golden retrievers can easily knock a child over my jumping up on them or send a small child flying with a wagging tail!
This is important It applies to all dogs, not just golden retrievers - Never leave very young children and dogs together unattended. Just as the dog could easily accidentally hurt the children, so could they hurt him by poking him in the eyes or ears or pulling his tail.

How much hair do golden retrievers shed?

Golden retrievers do shed a lot of hair - their abundant coats will leave quite a large & constant amount of hair in your house. That's why it's so important to groom golden retrievers regularly as this can help deal with the issue of hair shedding, but if you really don't like the idea to dog hair in your home then I wouldn't recommend that you buy a golden retriever.

How much exercise do they need?

Golden retrievers are a sport breed and will need plenty of exercise. Once fully grown (about 2 years old) golden retrievers need regular periods of aerobic exercise. Golden retrievers would not be a good choice if you have a sedentary lifestyle yourself.
Be careful with golden retriever puppies under 18 months. While they need exercise, it must not be forced or sustained becuase of the risk of damaging their joints

Do golden retrivers bark a lot?

Not typically, but they can if they are bored.

I'm wondering if you can give a little more specific information on exactly how long a puppy can/should run/fetch for between 6 months and fully grown without damaging their joints? I have an amazing 5 month old male field golden and he's needing more and more exercise already. While I want to tire him out and make sure he's having fun, I certainly don't want to harm him... any help drawing the line here would be wonderful. Thank you! - Hazel

Thanks for the positive feedback guys - I've got a local friend here who's a vet (who better to consult than an expert re dog joints) - will post his answer soon!

I say it all comes down to tennis balls. If you're a tennis ball person (i.e. likes to throw them) then you're a Golden Retriever Person. If you don't like to throw them or will only through them before they are slobbery then you're not a Golden Retriever person.

Keep On Wagging!

If you're thinking about owning a retriever make sure you realize that the retriever part in the breed's name is not just for show. Goldens need a lot of exercise. They are hunting dogs - meant to chase after, deer, ducks, geese, squirrels... you name it. Mine recently went after a wild boar, and came back with a cut paw... but that's another story.

If you can't commit at least an hour a day to your dog.... your golden retriever will not be happy.

By the way, I'd like to invite all of you to come make a profile for your dogs on my new site:

Hi, I am a new Golden owner. My mother bought me a golden so needles to say I was NOT prepared for the maintenance required, but am learning VERY fast!

I was wondering if you could help with some issues I am having with Murphy.
1) I understand that goldens shed a lot, but sometimes I feel that his shedding is never ending. He is 11 months old now. Is he losing his hair? Some people have said it is just shedding season, PLUS his adult coat is coming in...is this true? I brush him every night but I feel like it is never ending. Is this common or should I be concern? He has a full coat.
2) I think he has an oral fixation. He picks up my shoes and socks ALL the time. He still chews my shoes though and destroys them. I don't know how to get him to stop this. I put my shoes on an upper shelf, but he still gets them...somehow! He won't chew the socks just carries them around. Would you recommend anything or a trick to get him to stop the chewing?
I appreciate your feedback!!
